Minnetonka Boulevard

Hennepin County, in coordination with the City of St. Louis Park, is planning to reconstruct Minnetonka Boulevard (County Road 5) between Vernon Avenue and Xylon Avenue. Construction is planned to begin in 2027.

We want to hear your vision for the future of Minnetonka Boulevard. Check back here for opportunities, both virtual and in-person, to tell us about how you use the road today and how you think it can be improved. Your input, alongside city and county plans, technical needs and feasibility, will inform design decisions in the months ahead.

  • New road for 21st Century

by Mnmom, about 1 month ago

Minnetonka Blvd is a major artery and as such we need to better balance the needs. As a major bus route we need a 3-lane road with the center dual left so that cars don't try to drive on the shoulder, there's room to move past stopped busses, and so that there is adequate space in busy multi-entrance areas like around Texas Tonka. There would be a good bike lane so that it doesn't conflict with walkers on a sidewalk to keep cyclists out of traffic. The light at Texas needs to be addressed as the congestion and confusion makes... Continue reading

  • No roundabouts

Please do not add roundabouts at any of the intersections at Minnetonka boulevard they are useless and potentially dangerous!
  • No more shoulders

by MCorkers, about 1 month ago
The drivers on Minnetonka Blvd have lost the right to shoulder lanes in my opinion. Any time a car stops to wait for clearance to take a left turn onto a side street, a parade of impatient drivers begin performing illegal right hand passes, one by one, turning what is intended to be a bike lane into their personal passing lane.

The bike lanes should be moved off street, as they have been on Cedar and phase one of the Minnetonka Blvd rebuild, and the road should be reconstructed without the ability for drivers to pass on the right.

  • No Longer a Logging Road

by Tyler M, about 1 month ago

My vision for Minnetonka Blvd is a road that doesn't drive like a logging road from the 1920s. I envision lighted pedestrian walk-ways. I envision turn lanes. I envision buried overhead facilities. I envision a world where I don't have to be terrified for my child's safety.

My vision for Minnetonka Blvd. is that it wouldn't be the barrier between SLP neighborhoods that it is. The lack of marked/lighted crosswalks except for at stoplights is dangerous and inhibits interconnectedness.
  • Safer Pedestrian and bike access, Turn Lanes, reduced shoulder

by PGrantLarsen, about 1 month ago
The number of vehicles the zip past around a turning vehicle on the shoulder is a HUGE safety concern. Have seen too many potential accidents caused by this. Bikers, pedestrians are at great risk. Provide updates that create a better flow of traffic while still allowing cars turning left safety. Reduce the shoulder, create a turning lane, and create dedicated, off street pedestrian walkways. I don't even like walking on the sidewalks on MTKA Blvd with my kid because of the vulnerability and erratic driving that occurs. Need separation of vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic. Provide more controlled crossings.
  • Safer stroads

Bikes, pedestrians, school kids walking to school… do whatever it takes to make Minnetonka blvd safer for residents to cross and walk / bike along side.
  • Safe Bike Lanes

by SLP Cyclist , about 1 month ago

The current Minnetonka “bike lanes” are some of the worst in Minnesota.

Incredibly unsafe, no protection from cars, water grates that you have to ride around due to potholes around them.

    Potholes in the bike lanes.

Cars on the road drive so fast, scary for everyone.
If you look at Strava heatmaps you can see why Minnetonka is so important for cyclists in the cities!

  • Add Pedestrian/Bike Crossing locations using activated crosswalk beacons

by Riley, about 1 month ago

Regardless of the design or layout finalized for Minnetonka Blvd, I ask that you please strongly consider adding pedestrian/bicycle crossing locations every 3-4 blocks or so (whichever spacing makes sense) and utilize the HAWK beacon (high-intensity activated crosswalk beacon), pedestrian hybrid beacon, or a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB). See link here with diagram showing the crossing concept: Diagram - Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon(External link).

It is a traffic control device used to stop road traffic and allow pedestrians to cross safely. The purpose of a HAWK beacon or RRFB beacon is to allow protected pedestrian crossings(External link), stopping vehicular... Continue reading

  • Traffic calming, bikeable, walkable, with tree care

by ejb, about 1 month ago

I bike, drive, walk, and bus along Minnetonka (in that order of frequency) and in my opinion the road functions well. Please, no turn lane except at major intersections (those already exist) because that will only encourage traffic to move faster. Traffic speed is the major problem that I can see--and hear, as I live on Minnetonka Blvd.

Please maintain (at the very least) or enhance the bike lanes and the sidewalks. More visible crosswalks, especially those not at controlled intersections, like the one at Zarthan, near my house. It can be difficult to cross there because many people don't... Continue reading
