Add Pedestrian/Bike Crossing locations using activated crosswalk beacons
Regardless of the design or layout finalized for Minnetonka Blvd, I ask that you please strongly consider adding pedestrian/bicycle crossing locations every 3-4 blocks or so (whichever spacing makes sense) and utilize the HAWK beacon (high-intensity activated crosswalk beacon), pedestrian hybrid beacon, or a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB). See link here with diagram showing the crossing concept: Diagram - Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon.
It is a traffic control device used to stop road traffic and allow pedestrians to cross safely. The purpose of a HAWK beacon or RRFB beacon is to allow protected pedestrian crossings, stopping vehicular traffic only as needed.
The volume and speed with which current traffic operates on Minnetonka Blvd makes it very difficult to cross safely. In a neighborhood with more and more kids walking or biking to/from school and for leisure, this is very important. An example of this type of crossing can be found near the West End at the intersection of W 16th St and West End Blvd where there is a self activated pedestrian crossing between the Rojo Restaurant and the Cub Foods Parking lot. Thank you!
