Brookdale Library opened for service in 1981. It was the first library built for the Brooklyn Center community. The library underwent a major renovation and expansion in 2002-03 and reopened in 2004 in its current location. The library is part of a larger complex that houses district courts and a Hennepin County service center.
Planning is underway for a building remodel. Highlights of the upcoming project include:
Update the current library space and make it more efficient and patron friendly
Update the Service Center
Improve the energy efficiency of the entire building through building-wide infrastructure replacements (roof, lighting, mechanical and electrical system upgrades)
Install EV vehicle chargers, in alignment with Hennepin County’s Climate Action Plan
After the current schematic design phase is complete, we anticipate this project will be paused, with construction likely beginning in 2029. When the project resumes, the building will be closed for approximately 20 months. More information, and an updated project timeline, will be shared when the project resumes.
