No plastic in grocery shopping

I do three things consistently:

1. I take cloth bags of all sizes to pack my groceries in. I buy bulk as much as possible - rice, spices, nuts, beans, salt, sugar, coffee etc.

2. I refuse to buy fruits or vegetables wrapped in plastic. I don't buy berries, cauliflower, salads in plastic containers, chips, pasta - if it is wrapped even in an inch of plastic, I do not buy it.

3. I am wlling to spend some extra money to buy meat from the butcher or co-op wrapped in paper. I do not buy meat or fish wrapped in plastic.

By focusing on this and simply refusing to waste food, I have significantly reduced the amount I spend on groceries. My trash bin is now every other week and I save money there also.

I try to do all 3 of these things as well and try to cook all of my food from scratch to avoid packaging, but sometimes it is hard when I am pressed for time or traveling and find limited options. Luckily my coop deli has compostable containers, but grocery delis are a real issue these days with everything pre-packaged in single use plastic and single servings in a package. Ideally it would be nice if I could bring in my own reusable container to purchase deli items but grocery stores aren't allowed to do that due to health department rules.
