Make It Homemade!

I have been “making my own” for so many things and the ingredients can usually be purchased package free. Consider the prepared food items you buy and think about what you can make. It does take more time, but with practice comes efficiency. I recently started making homemade ice cream. I borrowed a friend’s ice cream maker, and buy the milk and cream in glass returnable bottles. It is so much better homemade and no ice cream carton to throw away. Buy used equipment or borrow from a friend.

Before Covid, there were deli counters where you could buy food using your own container. I hope we get back to that again soon. I’m not sure if the laws have changed, but prior to Covid, there was no law or health code in Minneapolis that said food couldn’t be dispensed into a customer’s container, despite what some places tried to tell me.

I still have a list of things to try making homemade that I haven’t gotten to, but it’s been pretty easy to find recipes online and fun trying them!

Debbie,

It is great that you have learned lots of ways to DIY, are having fun, and are even sharing equipment in the process!

Minnesota Food Code does set some pretty tight restrictions on filling a customer's containers-what is allowed and how it must be done. The law hasn't changed, but some businesses may have changed what they do based on their own perceptions or concerns about their image or liability.

If you like policy and want to read the text in the Food Code, you can use this link to find it (starting on page 66).
