Cedar Avenue safety improvements

We are working to make it safer and easier to travel on Cedar Avenue (County Road 152) between Lake and 42nd streets in South Minneapolis. In coordination with the City of Minneapolis, we plan to reconstruct the road from spring 2028 through fall 2029.

  • Fall 2025 public engagement summary

Public engagement for the first stage of the safety improvement project took place throughout Fall 2025. The engagement team collected community feedback in the following ways: hosted an open house, walk and bike audits, created an online survey, business canvassing and conversations with those riding the bus.

    Participation by the numbers

    • Open house: 45 attendees
    • Walk and bike audits: 12 participants
    • Online survey: 136 submissions
    • Business canvassing: 49 businesses visited
    • Conversations with people riding the bus: 12 conversations

    What we heard

    • Community members expressed a strong desire for physical infrastructure (raised crosswalks, concrete bump outs, etc.) to increase pedestrian safety
    • Community members want walk and bike improvements to be prioritized as much as car improvements
    • Community members want Cedar Avenue to be more welcoming to encourage people to access local businesses

    Improvement priorities

At the open house and on the online survey, participants were asked to choose their top three priorities for Cedar Avenue. Here are the combined results:

    • Traffic calming – 121
    • Safer crosswalks – 106
    • Green space and tree canopy – 65
    • Improving the surface of the road – 54
    • Improving and connecting sidewalks – 47
    • Maintaining the amount of on-street parking – 44
    • Increased lighting – 36
