Washington Avenue safety improvements

A street view of Washington Avenue and Park Avenue in downtown Minneapolis with people walking in crosswalks

Hennepin County is working to make it safer and easier for people who walk, bike, and roll to travel on Washington Avenue (County Road 152) between 5th and 11th avenues in downtown Minneapolis. We plan to make improvements starting in 2028.

Project goals

Our designs will focus on ensuring people living, working and visiting the area can make connections safely and providing businesses with the access they need. Similar work was completed in 2017 immediately to the west of this area.

We’re including the following goals:

  • Providing safer ways for people walking, biking, and rolling to cross the roadway
  • Continuing the existing separated bikeway
  • Supporting transit to meet current and future needs
  • Making the area more inviting
  • Including green infrastructure

We’re collaborating with the city of Minneapolis on this project and will be using city and county plans to guide our work.
