We asked the community: Describe your vision for a future Marshall street.

Here are the responses collected between September and November, 2024.

There is excessive speeding on the residential area of Marshall St NE between 5th Ave NE and 8th Ave NE. Even with a traffic light at 4th Ave NE (which is seldom RED), the traffic goes 10 to15 MPH OVER the 30 MPH speed limit. When turning right into driveway, cars speed past on the left into the lane of on coming traffic (they have also tried to pass on the right side in front of me turning into the driveway, almost crashing into my car and then honking at me! At the 6xx corner, cars are constantly driving in the bike lane/parking lane, since they are speeding around the curve. A few years ago there was a bad motorcycle accident at the curve, a few years earlier a deadly car crash into a tree, and a tree on the park side was taken out by a speeding car crash. Need traffic calming on this residential portion of Marshall St.

My husband and I are occasional bikers on Marshall; would enjoy the chance to use the street without having fear for our safety

__

I envision a bikealbe and walkable street that connects me to the river and destinations along it. The 2018 study for above curb, walk and bike facilities on the river side is terrifc. Add greening and pedestrian lighting to make it a safer and more enjoyable route. What can be done to improve Edgewater Park in conjunction with both the Marshall and Lowry projects?

As a resident of NE MPLS. I personally don't see any issues with the existing roadway. The only thing that I would like to see is a bike path width sidewalk/path on the west side of this stretch. This would allow for easier and safer bike travel. This setup would allow bicyclists to travel freely up and down this stretch of roadway without needing to ride on the road - keeping them out of potential danger from motor vehicles. Additionally, a bike path width pathway on this stretch would provide more connection to the existing bike routes nearby

__

Would love to be able to use this road to bike and walk to the parks and to St Anthony main. Would also like to see it slowed down, lots of cars speed in this neighborhood. Would like a raised sidewalk/bike path like in other parts of the city. And lots of trees for shade. Better/safer/more comfortable crossings for pedestrians.

Stop wasting our precious tax money on nonsense that makes it more difficult to live here in Minneapolis. Our taxes have increased from 700$ a year to 6000$ a year. Who is planning this stuff that makes no sense for most residents? We live on 22nd Av Ne. We have lived here since 1991. No one who makes these plans actually lives in NE. Stop ruining our city.

__

Stop ruining the neighborhood with these cheap looking apart buildings that sit half empty. They look like legos and are not built to last. Ruining the exisiting housing stock and a fake bandaid for housing shortages. Most of them are not even in the realm of affordable either. The one on Marshall and Lowry is the worst, poor building management and the building has never been more than half capacity.

Instead of being a barrier to the parks and bike paths along the Mississippi river, reconstruction should facilitate informing people that the river and parks are nearby. Perhaps create “gateways” at any perpendicular access points (such as at 16th street). I envision gateway street architecture informing the community and facilitating crossing the street to the historic river that is so close and yet so unseen!

__

My vision for Marshall St NE is that is becomes a Parkway with a two way protected bikeway on the west. This design results in creating a more human scale Marshall Parkway where motorized vehicles drive slowly to enjoy the experience along with the numerous people walking, biking, and lingering along this renovated place within the Mississippi River corridor.

__

Marshall street should have: Slower car speeds, fewer cars, more stores, more density (people). This street is abutting the river- it should be welcoming and vibrant

__

People in motor vehicles vastly outnumber all other users of the corridor. I imagine a design that respects guests, visitors, and travelers in proportion to their numbers and capabilities.

__

I would like to see a larger sidewalk and a safe protected bike lane

__

Since Marshall St. NE connects to the bike trail along the river, it would be nice to have enhanced bike safety on this road as well. Further, I think it would be nice to have a bus route on this street, since University Avenue is already so busy. Currently, there are parts of the sidewalks torn up on Marshall and I worry about the accessibility for wheelchair users and other persons with mobility concerns.

__

I want Marshall to be a place I feel safe and welcomed while biking and walking. I want people who live along Marshall to be able to open their windows without traffic noise and pollution. I want businesses along Marshall to be accessible by transit, biking, and walking, and to provide bike parking. I want to feel and be safe when crossing Marshall on foot or on bike.

Traffic coming south on marshall take the curve on 14th very quickly. This is a common pedestrian crossway as there is easy access to the river walk and many people park near there to eat at Diane's. I bring my neice to the kids park there at the river and I'm anxious every time I try to cross that road. As a pedestrian, you can't see traffic coming around the corner - and when it does, its very fast. Perhaps a speed bump or pedestrian crossway would hep.

__

Right now it is hard seeing some cars pulling onto Marshall from driveways an streets due to Street Parking. Having a bigger no parking area around these areas would be very helpful

I navigate the city almost exclusively by bike and by foot. While Marshall Street north of Lowry has been greatly improved for bicycle traffic since reconstruction, it is currently unsafe south of Lowry. I hope to see the new Marshall Street reconstruction allow for easy bicycle access to the new riverfront trails at Graco Park as well as the upcoming bike/pedestrian bridge at 1720 NE Marshall St with as few necessary crossings of Marshall Street as possible. Between the new bridge and the current bike path entry just north of 1600 Marshall, I would love to see bidirectional bike path on the west side of Marshall to facilitate a road-free stretch between North Minneapolis and the riverfront trails down to Boom Island. North of the pedestrian bridge, however, I think a unidirectional bike lane on each side of the road (mirroring vehicular traffic) would allow for seamless transition to Marshall Street north of Lowry. Should there be a bidirectional path limited to one side of the road all the way up to Lowry, one would need to do a diagonal crossing at the Lowry/Marshall intersection, which is neither safe nor efficient given the vehicular traffic there. Lastly, I do hope that there is infrastructure for safe and easy bike/pedestrian crossing of Marshall at the new bridge. Ideally, one would be able to stop vehicular traffic with a red light (see SE 5th St/SE 10th Ave intersection) to facilitate safe passage of this busy roadway. In short, I hope you keep in mind the growing and changing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure along this roadway as you plan for this road redesign.

...is a crosswalk by the train tracks by 22nd NE. Many many people walk dogs and run and ride bicycles and cross there. The traffic stops some times but doesn't have a clear signal that they should. A lighted crossing alert system would surely help provide safety for all of us that use that crossing. Thank you.

__

Would like to have better pedestrian access on this road. The sidewalk is narrow and difficult to navigate for me and other friends I run with. I'd like to see parking reduced along this road and lanes narrowed and other measures to slow cars down. The additional space made available by narrowing lanes and reducing parking could be used to improve bike and pedestrian access.

__

My vision for Marshall is to provide better access for bikes and pedestrians. As the main road on the east side of the river, there is not great space for bikes and pedestrians. I think parking could be reduced to only one side of the street and use the extra space for a widened and protected bike and pedestrian path. At the very least, the existing sidewalks is riddled with cracks, driveways, and obstacles that make it hard to navigate.
